The Global Challenge of Poor-Quality Medicines in LMICs
A recent chapter titled “The Current Situation of Medicines Quality in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: New Challenges to be Addressed” (IntechOpen, 2025) sheds light on a growing global health concern: 10.5% of medicines worldwide are of poor quality, with the greatest impact seen in low- and middle-income countries. Harsh climates, weak regulatory systems, and fragmented supply chains contribute to the problem, jeopardising treatment for diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS. The authors call for stronger regulatory frameworks, traceability systems, and collaboration across nations to ensure medicine quality and patient safety.
The role of Quamed is to validate suppliers so that we can make sure that those suppliers have the systems to ensure that the products that they supply are of assured quality.
