Advancing Global Action Against Antimicrobial Resistance

The WHO AMR Surveillance and Quality Assessment Collaborating Centres Network, established in 2016, has significantly contributed to global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance and capacity-building. It has grown from 18 to 36 centres across 20 countries by 2025, supporting the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS) through the development of standards, capacity-building, and technical guidance. Despite its achievements, the network faces challenges such as limited geographical representation, lack of dedicated funding, and gaps in diagnostic infrastructure, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. To maximise its impact, the network must expand membership, improve output tracking, and advocate for sustainable financing while integrating AMR activities into broader health system strengthening initiatives. The network serves as a model for addressing global health challenges through collaboration, technical expertise, and strategic alignment.
